Rental Car Insurance
Liability gaps, country exclusions, and what your auto policy doesn't cover
Credit Card CDW Does Not Cover Liability — Leaving Millions in Exposure
Credit card rental car benefits provide Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) only — covering physical damage to the rental vehicle. They do not cover liability (damage to other vehicles, people, or property). In the US, personal auto insurance typically extends liability to rentals, but travelers without personal auto insurance have zero liability coverage. Internationally, US personal auto insurance does not apply at all.
Common Misconception
My credit card rental car insurance covers everything. Reality: CDW covers only damage to the rental car itself. Liability to others requires separate coverage.
