FAQ

Trip Cancellation Insurance

Named perils, CFAR, pandemic exclusions, and timing deadlines

Trip Cancellation Insurance Covers Only Specific Named Reasons

Standard trip cancellation insurance operates on a named-perils basis — only specific enumerated reasons qualify. Covered: illness/death, severe weather, airline bankruptcy, jury duty, military deployment. Not covered: work conflicts, change of mind, fear of travel, relationship breakups, visa denial (usually), pregnancy (usually), mental health conditions, pandemic fear without positive test. 33% of all travel insurance claims are denied.

Common Misconception

Travel insurance covers any cancellation. Reality: only named perils qualify.

Frequently Asked

What Covers This

  • CFAR for any-reason cancellation (50–80% reimbursement)
  • Standard policies for named perils
  • Cancel for Work Reasons (CFWR) add-on for employment-related cancellations

What Doesn't Cover This

  • Credit cards (named perils only, no CFAR)
  • Standard policies for non-listed reasons

CFAR Must Be Purchased Within Days of First Trip Deposit

Cancel For Any Reason policies must be purchased within 10–21 days of the initial trip deposit, must insure 100% of prepaid non-refundable costs, and require cancellation at least 48–72 hours before departure. Missing this window means CFAR is permanently unavailable for that trip. CFAR is available on roughly one-third of policies on Squaremouth and costs 40–60% more than standard coverage.

Common Misconception

I can add CFAR coverage anytime before my trip. Reality: the purchase window closes 10–21 days after your first trip payment.

Frequently Asked

What Covers This

  • CFAR purchased within the time-sensitive window
  • Must insure 100% of prepaid non-refundable trip cost

What Doesn't Cover This

  • Any policy purchased after the window
  • Credit cards (no CFAR ever)
  • Standard trip cancellation

Fear of Pandemic Travel Is Not Covered — Only Confirmed Diagnosis

Post-COVID, most insurers now treat a confirmed positive test with physician documentation as a standard covered illness. However, fear of travel, exposure without symptoms, voluntary quarantine, and government travel bans related to pandemics remain universally excluded from standard policies. Only CFAR covers pandemic-related voluntary cancellation.

Common Misconception

Travel insurance now covers COVID. Partially true: confirmed illness is covered, but fear, exposure, and government-imposed restrictions generally are not.

Frequently Asked

What Covers This

  • Standard policy (confirmed illness + doctor's note)
  • CFAR (any reason including pandemic fear)
  • Allianz Epidemic Coverage Endorsement on select plans

What Doesn't Cover This

  • Standard policies for fear/anxiety
  • Standard policies for voluntary quarantine
  • Standard policies for government travel bans
